Love Your Neighbor as Yourself

"Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself" is, according to Jesus, one of the greatest commandments (Matthew 22:39). Together with the love of God, it sums up the whole law: "For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself" (Galatians 5:14; see also Romans 13:9). To love your neighbor is not a vague feeling, but an active disposition that seeks the good of others through concrete acts of compassion, service, and justice. When a lawyer asks Jesus, "And who is my neighbour?", the Lord answers with the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). A wounded man lies on the road; a priest and a Levite pass by without stopping, but a Samaritan, moved with compassion, draws near, binds up his wounds, and cares for him. Jesus concludes: "Go, and do thou likewise" (Luke 10:37). The neighbor, then, is not only the one who resembles us, but anyone in need of help, without distinction. These verses invite us to live out a love that sees, that draws near, and that acts. To love your neighbor as yourself is to reflect the love of God by treating every person with the dignity, kindness, and justice we would wish to receive. This love breaks down barriers and makes the believer a concrete instrument of divine grace.
