Love in the Family

Love within the family is a reflection of God's own love, lived out in the home through forgiveness, service, and mutual self-giving. Jesus gave this commandment: "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another" (John 13:34), and this love begins first of all at home. The apostle Peter exhorts us: "And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins" (1 Peter 4:8). The family is the first place where faith is passed on and where bonds are woven from one generation to the next. God entrusts parents with the responsibility of writing His Word on the hearts of their children: "And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house" (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). It is in the everyday, through patience and grace, that family love is built. These verses offer wisdom for cultivating a home filled with love, where each person learns to bear with, serve, and build up one another in Christ. Far from being a fleeting feeling, family love is forged in ordinary acts: listening, forgiving, sharing time and prayer. In this way the home becomes a place where the tenderness of God is reflected and where the true bonds of the heart are strengthened.
