Local Missions in the Bible
Local missions describes the work of carrying the gospel to the people nearest to us: our neighborhoods, cities, and the ordinary places where God has planted us. While Scripture commands a global witness, it consistently begins that witness at home. When Jesus saw the crowds, He was moved with compassion and told His disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers" (Matthew 9:37; Luke 10:2). The need is not distant; it is all around us, and the first response is prayer for workers. The Great Commission frames the scope of mission. Jesus commanded His followers to "go therefore and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19), but in Acts 1:8 He gave the pattern of expansion: "you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." Jerusalem, the home city, came first. Local mission is not a lesser calling but the starting point from which the gospel ripples outward. The early church modeled this faithfully. "Every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus" (Acts 5:42). When persecution scattered believers, "those who were scattered went about preaching the word" wherever they landed (Acts 8:4), turning every neighborhood into a mission field. Local mission rests on a simple necessity: "How are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?" (Romans 10:14). People cannot call on a Savior they have not been told about. Faithful local missions means living and speaking the gospel where we already are, through hospitality, service, and clear witness, so that the harvest near at hand is gathered for Christ.
