Walking in the Light of God

God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. "This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5). Scripture employs light as an image of His truth, His holiness, and His presence that dispels the darkness. Where the light of God shines, the shadows of sin, doubt, and falsehood retreat. This light is not only a reality to be contemplated, but a call to receive and to reflect. Jesus declared, "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness" (John 8:12), and He said to His disciples, "Ye are the light of the world" (Matthew 5:14). The believer is therefore not the source, but the reflection: he carries to the world the brightness received from God. To walk in the light is to live in truth and transparency: "if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another" (1 John 1:7). Jesus invites His disciples to let their light shine: "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 5:16). These verses invite the faithful to walk in the light of God, to flee the works of darkness, and to shine in the midst of the world, manifesting by their lives the truth and love of the Lord.
