The Levitical Law in the Bible
The Levitical Law refers to the body of commandments God gave Israel through Moses, recorded chiefly in the book of Leviticus. It governed worship, sacrifice, purity, and daily holiness, teaching the people how a holy God could dwell among a sinful nation. At its heart stands God's call: "Be holy, because I am holy" (Leviticus 11:45), and again, "Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy" (Leviticus 19:2). The whole law flows from the character of God himself. Much of Leviticus concerns sacrifice. When the Lord said, "When anyone among you brings an offering to the Lord, bring as your offering an animal" (Leviticus 1:2), he established a system pointing to the seriousness of sin and the costliness of forgiveness. The reason is given plainly: "For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar" (Leviticus 17:11). On the Day of Atonement, "atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the Lord, you will be clean from all your sins" (Leviticus 16:30). The Levitical Law also shaped ethics and community life. It commanded sacred feasts as "the appointed festivals of the Lord" (Leviticus 23:2), and summed up love for neighbor in words Jesus later affirmed: "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Leviticus 19:18). For Christians, these laws find their fulfillment in Christ, whose blood accomplished once for all the atonement the sacrifices foreshadowed. Yet the call to holiness and love endures, revealing God's unchanging desire for a people set apart to him.
