The Promise of the Latter Rain

The latter rain, also called the spring rain, is a rich biblical image of the blessing and revival that God pours out upon His people in due season. In the land of Israel, the autumn rain prepared the sowing and the spring rain ripened the harvest; without it there could be no crop. The prophet Joel announces this divine goodness: "Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain" (Joel 2:23). This promise reaches beyond the merely agricultural; it announces the spiritual refreshing and the outpouring of the Spirit that God grants to revive His people and bear fruit. The prophet Zechariah urges us to seek this grace: "Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain" (Zechariah 10:1). To wait for the latter rain, then, is to hope in faith for the refreshing work of God, believing that He sends His Spirit to renew hearts and make the harvest spring up in its season. These verses encourage the believer not to lose heart in times of spiritual drought, but to persevere in prayer and trust. Like rain that descends in its time, God brings refreshing to those who wait for Him and seek His face.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the latter rain mean in the Bible?
Joel 2:23 says that God gives "the former rain, and the latter rain." It is an image of the blessing and revival that God pours out in His time, like the rain that prepares and ripens the harvest, bringing refreshing and fruit.
How do I wait for God's latter rain?
By seeking God in faith and prayer, as Zechariah 10:1 urges: "Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain." To wait for the latter rain is to believe that God sends His Spirit to revive, renew, and bring His people to fruit in their season.
