The Lord's Table and Holy Communion
At the Last Supper, on the night before His crucifixion, Jesus instituted communion by taking the bread and the cup as a memorial of His body given and His blood shed. "And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me" (Luke 22:19). In the same way He presented the cup, declaring it to be the new covenant in His blood, poured out for the forgiveness of sins. This sacred meal is no mere commemoration; it is an invitation to remember the sacrifice of Christ, to celebrate the new covenant, and to enter into fellowship with Him and with His people. The apostle Paul passes on this same institution to the Corinthians: "For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come" (1 Corinthians 11:26). Thus, in partaking of the bread and the cup, the believer proclaims the Lord's death and looks toward His glorious return. The Supper stands at the center of Christian worship: it brings us back to the cross, nourishes faith, and unites the Church around her Saviour. These verses reveal the full depth of the Lord's table, a place of remembrance, gratitude, and living communion with Christ.
