Knowledge and Knowing God in the Bible

Biblical knowledge is not a mere accumulation of information, but the act of knowing God himself and living in accordance with his truth. Proverbs 1:7 lays the foundation: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction." True knowledge therefore begins with a right relationship with God, marked by reverence and awe. Scripture highly values growth in the knowledge of God, for such knowledge transforms the whole of life. The apostle Paul prays that believers may be "filled with the knowledge of His will" and may increase "in the knowledge of God" (Colossians 1:9-10). This knowledge is not confined to the intellect; it engages the heart and leads to obedience. Paul also asks that God would give "the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him" (Ephesians 1:17), that the eyes of the heart may be enlightened. The Bible nevertheless warns against a prideful knowledge: "Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies" (1 Corinthians 8:1). True knowledge is never separated from love; on the contrary, it is joined to love in order to build others up and to deepen communion with God. These verses encourage us to seek a knowledge that does not make us vain, but that edifies, that transforms, and that leads to an ever deeper relationship with the Lord. Knowing facts about God is not enough: the goal is to know him himself.
