The Kingdom of God in Scripture
The kingdom of God is the reign and presence of God in the midst of his people, inaugurated by Jesus and destined to be consummated in glory. Jesus made it the heart of his preaching: "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you" (Matthew 6:33). The kingdom is not merely a future place or a reality reserved for the end of time; it is a present reality in the hearts that submit to God. Indeed, Jesus declared, "The kingdom of God is within you" (Luke 17:21). Wherever God truly reigns, there his kingdom is found. Daniel 7:27 already announces an everlasting kingdom, whose dominion will be given to the people of the saints of the Most High, a reign that will never pass away. Thus the kingdom of God has both a present and a future dimension: present, because God reigns even now in the hearts of those who belong to him; future, because it will be fully manifested when Christ returns in his glory. To seek the kingdom first is to reorder all of life's priorities around God and his will. It is to give him first place, to live under his reign, and to trust in his provision. These verses invite us to seek the kingdom above all else, to let the reign of God transform our existence, and to await with hope the glorious consummation of this eternal kingdom.
