King of Kings in the Bible

"King of kings" is one of Scripture's most exalted titles for God and for the Lord Jesus Christ, declaring His absolute and unrivaled sovereignty over every earthly ruler, nation, and power. The phrase asserts that above all human thrones stands one supreme throne to which all others are accountable. Moses already framed this truth when he called the LORD "God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome" (Deuteronomy 10:17), establishing that Israel's God was not merely a tribal deity but the universal Sovereign. The pagan king Nebuchadnezzar was compelled to confess the same after Daniel interpreted his dream, acknowledging that the God of heaven is "a God of gods and a Lord of kings" (Daniel 2:47). Psalm 2:6 anticipates the messianic King whom God installs on Zion, His holy hill, a King the nations cannot overthrow. The New Testament brings this title to its fullest expression in Jesus. Paul reminds Timothy that God will display "the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords" at the appointed time (1 Timothy 6:15). The book of Revelation twice crowns the returning Christ with this name: the Lamb conquers because "he is Lord of lords and King of kings" (Revelation 17:14), and on His robe and thigh is written "King of kings and Lord of lords" (Revelation 19:16). Philippians 2:10 promises that at His name every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. For believers, confessing Christ as King of kings is both comfort and summons. It assures us that no tyrant, government, or spiritual power has the final word, for history bends toward His throne. It also calls us to wholehearted allegiance, ordering our loyalties, fears, and hopes beneath the One whose kingdom has no end. To know Him as King of kings is to live unafraid and to worship with confidence.
