Judge Not in the Bible

"Judge not, that ye be not judged" (Matthew 7:1). With these words Jesus warns against the hypocritical judgment that condemns a neighbor while ignoring one's own faults. In the Sermon on the Mount He illustrates this warning with a striking image: the one who tries to remove the mote from his brother's eye without seeing the beam in his own (Matthew 7:3-5). Scripture thus calls for humility, mercy, and self-examination before pointing the finger at others. This does not mean abandoning all discernment, for the Bible clearly distinguishes hypocritical condemnation from wise and righteous judgment. Jesus indeed declares, "Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment" (John 7:24). The believer is called not to usurp the place of God, who alone is the perfect Judge, but to leave the final verdict in His hands. Before noting another's flaw, he must first remove the beam from his own eye, that is, acknowledge his own need of grace. These verses invite us to treat others with the same grace we ourselves need, to practice patience rather than criticism, and to leave the final judgment to God. To live under the gaze of God is to learn to see our own shortcomings first, before we judge those of others.
