The Year of Jubilee in the Bible

The Year of Jubilee was one of the most radical and gracious institutions God gave to Israel, a sweeping reset of debt, ownership, and bondage that proclaimed the Lord's lordship over the land and over His people. Every fiftieth year, on the Day of Atonement, the trumpet was to sound throughout the land, and Israel was to "proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof" (Leviticus 25:10). It was a year hallowed by God, in which everyone returned to his own possession and to his own family. The Jubilee was to be a year of rest like the sabbatical year: the people were not to sow or reap what grew of itself, but to eat the increase of the field as God provided (Leviticus 25:11-12). Its central principle was the restoration of inheritance. Land that had been sold because of poverty reverted to its original family, so that no family permanently lost the portion God had apportioned to them (Leviticus 25:13). Even those who had sold themselves into servitude were released, for the Lord declared that the Israelites were His servants whom He brought out of Egypt, and so a Hebrew slave was to go free in the Jubilee (Leviticus 25:54). The value of land and property was always to be calculated in proportion to the years remaining until the Jubilee, since ultimately one was buying or selling only a number of harvests, not the land itself (Leviticus 25:28; 27:24). This guarded against permanent dispossession and rooted Israel's economy in justice and mercy. The Jubilee ultimately points to Christ. When Jesus stood in the synagogue and read from Isaiah, He announced "the acceptable year of the Lord," proclaiming liberty to the captives and release to the oppressed (Isaiah 61:1). In Him the deepest Jubilee dawns: forgiveness of debt, freedom from bondage, and restoration to our true inheritance in God.
