Jerusalem in the Bible: The City of God

Jerusalem holds a central place throughout all of Scripture: the city of the great King, the stage of redemption, and a figure of the heavenly Jerusalem. Psalm 48:2 celebrates it as "the city of the great King," beautiful and lofty, the joy of the whole earth. It is there that the history of salvation unfolds, all the way to the cross and resurrection of Jesus. The Bible invites the believer to pray for this city: Psalm 122:6 exhorts us to "pray for the peace of Jerusalem," for the peace of the city of God is bound up with the good of his people. But Scripture does not stop at the earthly Jerusalem; it announces an eternal city. Revelation 21:2 describes "the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." There God will dwell with his own, and there will be no more tears, no more mourning, crying, or pain. The earthly Jerusalem thus becomes a sign of a greater reality: the final dwelling place that God is preparing for all who are in Christ. These verses invite us to contemplate the spiritual meaning of Jerusalem and to live in the hope of the heavenly city, where God will make his home among his people forever, in a peace that nothing will ever disturb again.
