Jericho in the Bible
Jericho is one of the most memorable cities in Scripture, the scene of God's miraculous power at the entrance to the Promised Land and, centuries later, a setting for the grace of Jesus Christ. Its story is a lasting lesson in faith, obedience, and divine deliverance. When Israel crossed the Jordan, Jericho stood as the first fortified obstacle. The Lord assured Joshua, "See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour" (Joshua 6:2). Victory was promised before a single stone fell. God's unusual battle plan required marching around the city for seven days, and on the seventh the people were to shout, "Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city" (Joshua 6:16). When they obeyed, "the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city... and they took the city" (Joshua 6:20). Hebrews 11:30 enshrines this as a triumph of faith: "By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days." Jericho is also remembered for Rahab. Before the conquest, Joshua sent spies who "came into an harlot's house, named Rahab" (Joshua 2:1). Her faith in Israel's God spared her household and wove her into the lineage of Christ. In the Gospels, Jericho becomes a place of mercy. There Jesus restored sight to "blind Bartimaeus" (Mark 10:46), who cried out for mercy and was healed. And it was at Jericho that "Zacchaeus" the tax collector climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus, for "Jesus entered and passed through Jericho" (Luke 19:1), bringing salvation to his house. Thus Jericho testifies that the same God who tears down walls also opens blind eyes and seeks the lost.
