Bible Verses About Jehovah-Shalom, the LORD Is Peace

"Jehovah-Shalom" means "the LORD is peace," the name Gideon gave to the altar he built after receiving God's peace in the very midst of his fear. In the account of Judges 6:24, as Gideon feared he would die for having seen the angel of the LORD, God said to him: "Peace be unto thee; fear not." This name reveals a God who gives a peace the world cannot offer, even in the midst of uncertainty and danger. Biblical peace, shalom, is not merely the absence of conflict; it is the fullness, harmony, and well-being that flow from the presence of God himself. Jesus takes up this promise when he declares in John 14:27: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." This peace guards the heart and overcomes fear in every circumstance. Philippians 4:6-7 invites the believer to present his requests to God, so that the peace of God, which passes all understanding, may keep his heart and his thoughts in Christ Jesus. These verses call us to find in God true peace, the peace that calms the troubled soul and establishes us in trust, because the LORD himself is our peace. Like Gideon, we can build an altar of remembrance in the very place of our fear, declaring that the God who speaks peace over our hearts is greater than every threat the world may bring.
