Bible Verses About Jehovah-Nissi, the LORD My Banner

"Jehovah-Nissi" means "the LORD is my banner," the name Moses gave to the altar he built after Israel's victory over Amalek. Exodus 17:15 records: "And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi." This name reveals God as the standard of victory and the refuge in battle. During the conflict at Rephidim, as long as Moses held up his hands toward heaven, Israel prevailed; when they were lowered, Amalek gained the upper hand. Aaron and Hur then upheld Moses' hands until the going down of the sun, and the victory was won. This scene teaches a profound truth: triumph does not come from the strength of arms, but from dependence upon God and from prayer lifted up to him. Under the banner of the Lord, the people never fight alone. In antiquity the standard was the rallying point around which the army gathered and took fresh courage; so God himself becomes the rallying sign and the guarantee of victory for those who trust in him. These verses strengthen the assurance of the believer engaged in spiritual warfare, reminding him that his strength and his triumph come from God, and not from himself. As the apostle Paul writes, "But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:57).
