What the Bible Says About Investing
The Bible does not condemn investing; it commends wise, diligent, and patient stewardship of resources while warning against greed and the love of money. Money itself is a tool entrusted by God, and how we manage it reveals the condition of our hearts. Scripture offers timeless financial principles that align perfectly with sound investing. The first principle is patient diligence. "The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want" (Proverbs 21:5). Get-rich-quick schemes are rebuked, for "wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase" (Proverbs 13:11). True increase comes through steady, honest effort over time, not speculation. The second is wise planning and counting the cost. Jesus asked, "which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost?" (Luke 14:28). Even the ant "provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest" (Proverbs 6:8), a model of foresight. Solomon counsels diversification against uncertainty: "Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth" (Ecclesiastes 11:2). The third principle is faithful stewardship that pleases the Master. In the parable of the talents, the servant who invested wisely heard, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant... thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things" (Matthew 25:21). God expects us to multiply, not bury, what He entrusts. Yet the highest investment is eternal. Jesus said, "lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven" (Matthew 6:20). Earthly investing is good and wise, but it must never become the heart's treasure. The Christian invests diligently, plans prudently, gives generously, and keeps eternity in view.
