The Intercession of Christ in the Bible
The intercession of Christ is the glorious truth that the risen Lord Jesus continually pleads for His people before the Father. The apostle Paul anchors the believer's security in this ministry when he asks, "Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us" (Romans 8:34). Because Christ lives forever, His priestly work never lapses. Hebrews 7:25 declares that He "is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them." His intercession is not a desperate appeal but the confident presentation of His finished sacrifice. The foundation of this ministry was laid at the cross. Isaiah 53:12 prophesied that the Suffering Servant would bear "the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors"βa word fulfilled even in His dying breath when He prayed, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34). On the night before His death, He prayed for His own in the great High Priestly prayer of John 17, saying plainly, "I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me" (John 17:9). Now ascended, Christ has entered "into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us" (Hebrews 9:24). He is not in an earthly tabernacle but in the true sanctuary, presenting His blood on our behalf. When a believer sins, the assurance of 1 John 2:1 brings hope: "if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous." This doctrine offers immense comfort. The Christian's standing does not depend on the consistency of his own prayers but on the perfect, unceasing prayers of the Son of God. To know that Jesus prays for us by name strengthens weak faith, restores the fallen, and guarantees that those for whom He intercedes will be brought safely home.
