Incense in the Bible
Incense holds a rich and recurring place in the worship life of God's people throughout Scripture. From the earliest instructions given to Moses, the Lord commanded the construction of a dedicated altar of incense: "You shall make an altar to burn incense on; you shall make it of acacia wood" (Exodus 30:1). This altar stood before the veil in the tabernacle, and Aaron was charged to burn fragrant incense on it every morning when he tended the lamps (Exodus 30:7). The rising smoke was no mere ritual decoration; it was a sensory sign of devotion ascending continually before the presence of God. The deeper meaning of incense is unveiled in the Psalms and the New Testament, where it becomes a vivid picture of prayer. David prayed, "Let my prayer be set before You as incense, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice" (Psalm 141:2). This connection blossoms in Revelation, where an angel offers "much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar" (Revelation 8:3), and "the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God" (Revelation 8:4). Incense thus symbolizes the prayers of the faithful rising as a pleasing aroma to heaven. Incense also accompanied the holiest moments of Israel's worship. On the Day of Atonement, the high priest carried a censer of burning coals and incense behind the veil, so that "the cloud of incense may cover the mercy seat" and he would not die (Leviticus 16:13). Likewise, when Zechariah served in the temple, "the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense" (Luke 1:10). Together these passages teach that worship, intercession, and the mediating work that points to Christ are bound up in the fragrant offering of incense.
