Immutability in the Bible
The immutability of God is the truth that God does not change—His being, His character, His purposes, and His promises remain forever constant. In a world of ceaseless change, where every created thing decays and shifts, Scripture anchors the believer's hope in the unchanging God. He Himself declares it plainly: "For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed" (Malachi 3:6). Israel's very survival rested not on their faithfulness, which wavered, but on the unwavering constancy of God. This unchangeableness extends to God's nature as the source of all good. James writes that "every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning" (James 1:17). Unlike the sun and moon, which rise, set, and cast moving shadows, God has no flicker of change in His goodness. The psalmist contrasts the perishing creation with the eternal God: "They shall perish, but thou shalt endure... thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end" (Psalm 102:27). God's immutability also guarantees His word. Because He does not change, He never lies or repents like a man. "God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it?" (Numbers 23:19). The permanence of His promise is our security: "the word of our God shall stand for ever" (Isaiah 40:8). This doctrine is not cold abstraction but warm comfort. Because Jesus Christ "is the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever" (Hebrews 13:8), the Savior who loved sinners in the Gospels loves them still. God confirmed His promise with an oath, "willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel" (Hebrews 6:17). The unchanging God is a rock on which faith can rest with full assurance.
