Hurt in the Bible

Hurt is a universal human experience, and the Bible never minimizes the reality of emotional, spiritual, and physical pain. Instead, Scripture presents a God who draws near to the wounded rather than standing at a distance. Psalm 34:18 declares, "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit," assuring sufferers that their pain attracts God's tender presence rather than His indifference. The same comfort shines in Psalm 147:3, where the Lord "heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds," using the image of a physician who carefully tends every injury. The Bible also points to Jesus as the answer to human hurt. Isaiah 61:1, which Jesus applied to Himself, announces good news "to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives." In John 16:33 He is honest about life in a fallen world: "In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." Hurt is real, yet it is never the final word for those who belong to Christ. His invitation in Matthew 11:28, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest," offers a refuge for every weary and aching heart. Scripture further teaches that God redeems our pain so that we can comfort others. Second Corinthians 1:4 says He "comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction." Our wounds, healed by grace, become channels of compassion. Finally, the Bible sets our present sorrow against a certain hope: Revelation 21:4 promises that God "will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore." Until that day, believers grieve honestly yet hopefully, bringing every hurt to the God who heals.
