Honoring Your Father and Mother

'Honor your father and your mother' is the first commandment that comes with a promise. Engraved at the heart of the Decalogue, it declares: 'Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you' (Exodus 20:12). The apostle Paul recalls it for believers: 'Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother β€” this is the first commandment with a promise β€” that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land' (Ephesians 6:1-3). Honoring one's parents goes beyond the simple obedience of childhood: it is an attitude of the heart made of respect, gratitude, and care, recognizing the place God has given them. This honor accompanies the whole of life. When parents grow old, Scripture calls us to care for them concretely: 'If a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God' (1 Timothy 5:4). To honor one's parents is therefore an act of love and obedience toward God that draws his blessing. These verses teach us to esteem, listen to, and support those who gave us life, through kind words, gratitude, and faithful attention to their needs at every stage of existence.
