Honor in the Bible

Honor is one of the great relational themes of Scripture, describing the respect, esteem, and value we are called to give to God and to others. Far from being a worldly concern for status, biblical honor flows from recognizing the worth God has placed in people and the authority He has established. Romans 12:10 sets the tone for the Christian community: "Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another." Believers are to outdo one another in showing honor rather than in seeking it. The call to honor begins at home and extends to all society. The fifth commandment, Exodus 20:12, says, "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land," attaching a promise of blessing to this foundational duty. Peter broadens the scope in 1 Peter 2:17: "Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king." Honor is owed to family, fellow believers, civic authorities, and ultimately to God Himself. Scripture teaches that honor is also expressed through tangible action and submission. Proverbs 3:9 urges, "Honor the LORD with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase," showing that worship and generosity honor God. Romans 13:7 commands rendering "honor to whom honor" is due, including governing authorities, while 1 Timothy 5:17 says faithful elders who lead well are "worthy of double honor." Finally, honor in the Bible is bound to humility. First Peter 5:5 instructs the younger to submit to the elder and all to "be clothed with humility, for God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." The path to true honor is not self-promotion but lowliness; God Himself lifts up those who honor Him and esteem others above themselves.
