The Holy Spirit: His Person and Work

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity: God himself, present and active within the believer. He is not a mere impersonal force, but a divine Person who comforts, guides, teaches, convicts of sin, and produces in us his fruit and his gifts. Before his departure, Jesus promised the Spirit as 'another Helper, to be with you forever' (John 14:16). This name, Paraclete, means the one who comes alongside us to help and defend. The Spirit 'will teach you all things' (John 14:26) and 'will guide you into all the truth' (John 16:13). His work is vast and precise: he convicts the world 'concerning sin and righteousness and judgment' (John 16:8); he gives power to witness, for 'you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you' (Acts 1:8); he produces the fruit of the Spirit, 'love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control' (Galatians 5:22-23). Indwelling the heart of the believer, he seals him, assures him of his adoption, and intercedes for him according to God's will when words fail (Romans 8:26). These verses unveil the person and work of the Spirit, who dwells in the redeemed and enables them to live and serve God with power, gentleness, and truth.
