Holiness in the Bible
Holiness is being set apart for God, reflecting his purity and character. The call resounds from one end of Scripture to the other: 'You shall be holy, for I am holy' (1 Peter 1:16, citing Leviticus). God, who is thrice holy, invites his people to a consecrated life β not by their own merit, but by the work of his grace that sanctifies. Holiness is neither an effortless perfection nor a mere external morality; it is a walk of growing likeness to Christ, the fruit of the Spirit who transforms the believer from glory to glory. The writer of Hebrews exhorts us, 'Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord' (Hebrews 12:14). This holiness does not depend on our strength alone: 'Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely' (1 Thessalonians 5:23). Thus the holy life is nourished by the Word, by obedience, and by communion with God, in constant dependence on his Spirit. Far from confining the believer to fear or legalism, holiness sets him free to live according to his true identity: a people belonging to God. These verses invite us to actively pursue holiness, not as a burden, but as the joyful calling of those who have been redeemed and called to bear the image of their Savior.
