What the Bible Says About Heresy
Heresy in the Bible refers to false teaching that distorts the gospel and divides the people of God, and Scripture treats it with great seriousness because what we believe about Christ and salvation is a matter of eternal importance. The New Testament repeatedly warns that error will arise both from outside and from within the church, and it calls believers to discern, guard, and hold fast to the truth once for all delivered to the saints. The apostles foresaw the rise of false teachers. Second Peter 2:1 warns, "But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them." Paul, in 1 Timothy 4:1, writes that "in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons," and in 2 Timothy 4:3 he foretells a time when people "will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions." Jude 1:4 likewise speaks of ungodly people who "crept in unnoticed" and "pervert the grace of our God into sensuality." The seriousness of heresy is seen in Paul's solemn words in Galatians 1:8: "Even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed." The true gospel is not negotiable. Scripture also gives pastoral instruction for responding to those who promote division. Titus 3:10 directs, "As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him," calling for patient correction followed, if necessary, by separation. Yet Scripture does not leave believers defenseless. First John 4:1 commands, "Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world." The remedy for heresy is not fear but discernment grounded in God's word, a love for the truth, and faithfulness to the genuine gospel of Jesus Christ. By knowing Scripture and treasuring sound doctrine, the church guards the flock and exalts the Savior whom every heresy ultimately denies.
