The Gift of Helps in the Bible

The gift of helps is one of the quieter yet deeply vital ministries God has given to His church, a Spirit-empowered ability to come alongside others and lighten their load so that the whole body of Christ can flourish. It is named directly among the gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:28: "And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues." By placing "helping" alongside more visible offices, Paul reminds us that practical service is no afterthought but a God-given grace essential to the church's health. The heart of helps is bearing one another's burdens. Galatians 6:2 commands, "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ," showing that helping is not mere busyness but a fulfillment of Christ's own law of love. Romans 12:7 lists "service" among the gifts and urges, "if service, in our serving," calling those gifted in this way to give themselves wholeheartedly to it. First Peter 4:10 widens the circle to every believer: "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace." Every Christian is a steward called to serve. Scripture also gives living examples. In Acts 6:3 the apostles appoint seven men "of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom" to oversee the practical care of widows, freeing others for prayer and the word and showing that helps undergirds every other ministry. Acts 9:36 remembers Tabitha, or Dorcas, who "was full of good works and acts of charity," sewing garments for the needy and so beloved that the church mourned her deeply. Together these texts honor the gift of helps as humble, Spirit-empowered service that reflects the heart of Christ, who came not to be served but to serve. Those who quietly assist, support, and meet practical needs are doing holy work, building up the body and fulfilling the law of love.
