Hell in the Bible

Hell is the place of final, conscious punishment for those who die in their sins and reject the salvation offered in Christ. It is a sober and weighty subject, and the Bible speaks of it not to terrify needlessly but to warn truthfully and to magnify the mercy that rescues us from it. Jesus Himself spoke of hell more than anyone else in Scripture, treating it as a real and eternal reality. The Lord teaches that the destinies of the righteous and the wicked are both everlasting: "these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal" (Matthew 25:46). He warns of a judgment so serious that radical action against sin is worthwhile, lest one be cast "into the fire that never shall be quenched" (Mark 9:43). He describes "a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth" (Matthew 13:42). In the account of the rich man and Lazarus, the rich man lifts up his eyes, "being in torments" (Luke 16:23), showing conscious awareness after death. The apostolic writings confirm this teaching. The Book of Revelation describes the final judgment: "whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire" (Revelation 20:15). Paul writes that those who reject the gospel "shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power" (2 Thessalonians 1:9), defining hell most deeply as separation from God. Jesus urges right reverence: "fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell" (Matthew 10:28). Yet the doctrine of hell is never the final word for those who turn to Christ. It exists as the dark backdrop against which the gospel shines: God "is not willing that any should perish," and the cross is His provision so that all who believe might escape judgment and receive eternal life. The teaching is meant to drive us, urgently and gladly, to the Savior.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about hell?
The Bible presents hell as real, conscious, and eternal. Jesus speaks of "everlasting punishment" (Matthew 25:46) and "the fire that never shall be quenched" (Mark 9:43), and Revelation 20:15 describes the lake of fire for those not written in the book of life.
Is hell eternal according to Scripture?
Yes. Jesus contrasts "everlasting punishment" with "life eternal" using the same word for both (Matthew 25:46), and Paul calls it "everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord" (2 Thessalonians 1:9). Scripture presents it as conscious and unending.
How can someone be saved from hell?
Through faith in Jesus Christ. Hell is the judgment the gospel rescues us from. Jesus warns us to fear God who can cast soul and body into hell (Matthew 10:28), yet He came to save; those whose names are written in the book of life are spared (Revelation 20:15).
