The Gospel: Good News of Salvation

The gospel is the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ: his death, his burial, and his resurrection for our sins. The apostle Paul proclaims its heart without hesitation: "I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth" (Romans 1:16). He sums up its essential content: "Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). The gospel, then, is not good advice that man must apply, but good news, the announcement of a work already accomplished by God on behalf of sinners. It reveals the love of God and opens, through faith in Christ, the way of eternal life. This message is powerful: it transforms lives, reconciles man with God, and gives a hope that does not disappoint. That is why Jesus commanded his disciples to proclaim it: "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15). Scripture calls every believer to believe this gospel, to live it, and to announce it. These verses summarize the center of the Christian faith and celebrate the power of the gospel, which saves everyone who places his trust in Jesus Christ. Because it is "the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth" (Romans 1:16), the gospel is not bound by nationality, merit, or past; it meets every sinner with the same finished work and the same risen Savior, calling all who hear to repent and believe (Mark 1:15).
