What the Bible Says About Gender Identity

Gender identity is one of the most discussed subjects of our time, and Scripture speaks to it by beginning at creation. Genesis 1:27 declares, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." From the very first chapter of the Bible, maleness and femaleness are presented not as social constructions or personal inventions but as God's intentional design, both bearing the divine image with equal dignity and worth. Genesis 5:2 repeats this truth: "Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created." Jesus himself anchored his teaching on marriage in this creational pattern. In Matthew 19:4 he asked, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female?" and in Mark 10:6 he affirmed, "from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female." For Jesus, the distinction between male and female was original, good, and foundational to God's purposes for human relationships and family. Deuteronomy 22:5, within the law of Israel, expressed a concern that the God-given distinction between the sexes be honored rather than blurred. At the same time, Scripture treats every individual with profound tenderness. Psalm 139:13-14 says God formed our inmost being and knit us together in the womb, and that we are "fearfully and wonderfully made." This means that those who wrestle with questions of identity are not mistakes but persons known and loved by their Creator. A faithful biblical approach holds together two truths: that God designed humanity as male and female with purpose, and that he meets every struggling person with compassion, dignity, and the invitation to find their deepest identity in him. The church is called to speak this truth with both conviction and grace.
