Galilee in the Bible
Galilee is the northern region of ancient Israel that became the primary stage for the public ministry of Jesus Christ. Though often despised by the religious establishment of Jerusalem as a remote and mixed territory, Galilee was chosen by God to be the place where the light of the gospel would first shine. Matthew 4:15-16 quotes Isaiah 9:1, calling it "Galilee of the Gentiles," the land where "the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light." This ancient prophecy framed Galilee not as a backwater but as the foretold cradle of the Messiah's saving work. The Gospels record that after John the Baptist was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God (Mark 1:14), announcing that the kingdom of God was at hand. Matthew 4:23 summarizes his ministry there: he went throughout all Galilee teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease among the people. It was beside the Sea of Galilee that he called his first disciples, Peter and Andrew, as they cast their nets (Matthew 4:18). And it was at Cana of Galilee that Jesus performed his first miraculous sign, turning water into wine and manifesting his glory so that his disciples believed in him (John 2:11). Galilee also frames the resurrection story. The risen Christ directed his disciples to a mountain in Galilee, where he met them and gave the Great Commission to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:16). From this once-overlooked region the message of salvation went out to the ends of the earth. For the believer, Galilee is a reminder that God delights to begin his greatest works in humble, unexpected places, and that the light shines first where the darkness once seemed deepest.
