What the Bible Says About Fornication

Fornication, the biblical term for sexual immorality outside the covenant of marriage, is addressed throughout Scripture with both moral seriousness and pastoral hope. The apostle Paul gives one of the most direct commands in 1 Corinthians 6:18, urging believers to "flee fornication" because it is a sin uniquely committed against one's own body. Unlike other sins, sexual immorality involves the whole person and the temple of the Holy Spirit, which is why the Bible treats it not as a minor matter but as something that strikes at the heart of human dignity and our union with Christ. The will of God is stated plainly in 1 Thessalonians 4:3: "this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication." Holiness in the body is not an optional add-on to the Christian life but a central part of what it means to be set apart for God. Ephesians 5:3 raises the standard even higher, teaching that fornication and all uncleanness should "not be once named among you, as becometh saints." Believers are called not merely to avoid the act but to flee the whole orbit of impurity, including the desires and patterns of thought that lead to it. Scripture is also honest about the seriousness of the sin. In 1 Corinthians 6:9 and Galatians 5:19, fornication is named among the works of the flesh that are inconsistent with inheriting the kingdom of God, and Colossians 3:5 commands believers to "mortify" or put to death such desires as members of the old life. Yet this same Scripture is full of grace, for the very people Paul addresses had been washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus. Hebrews 13:4 lifts the eyes to God's beautiful design, declaring that "marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled." Sexual intimacy is not condemned; it is honored within the covenant God created for it. The Bible's warnings against fornication therefore guard a gift, calling men and women to purity, repentance where they have fallen, and the cleansing power of Christ who makes the impure holy.
