Forgiveness as a Christian Virtue

Forgiveness is one of the most distinctive and demanding virtues of Christian character. In Acts 13:38, the apostle Paul proclaims that it is through Jesus Christ that forgiveness of sins is announced. Ephesians 1:7 declares: 'In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.' The believer's capacity to forgive others flows directly from the experience of the forgiveness God has granted. Forgiveness, then, is not first an emotion but a decision of the will, sustained by the grace of God who has fully forgiven us in Christ. In Matthew 18:21-35, through the parable of the unmerciful servant, Jesus teaches that the one who has received the cancellation of an unpayable debt must in turn forgive the lighter debts of others. To forgive does not mean excusing the evil or erasing its consequences; nor does it mean waiting until the offender is worthy of forgiveness. It is an act of grace that frees the one who forgives as much as the one forgiven. Ephesians 4:32 calls us to it: 'Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.' Thus forgiveness becomes a cultivated virtue, the fruit of a life rooted in the grace already received.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why must we forgive according to the Bible?
Ephesians 4:32 says: 'Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.' The foundation of Christian forgiveness is the forgiveness we ourselves have received from God in Christ. Forgiving others is a response to the grace already received.
How do we forgive when the wrong has been great?
2 Peter 1:5-7 presents goodness, knowledge, and self-control as virtues that develop progressively. Deep forgiveness is likewise a journey: it begins with the decision to forgive, continues in prayer asking God to heal the wounds, and leads gradually to the freedom that true forgiveness brings.
Does forgiveness remove the consequences of the wrong committed?
No. To forgive is to renounce demanding repayment of the debt and to entrust justice to God (Romans 12:19), but it does not erase the consequences of the offense nor require pretending nothing happened. Forgiveness frees the heart from bitterness while leaving justice and healing in God's hands.
