Firstfruits Offered to God
The firstfruits are the first and best, offered to God in acknowledgment that he is the source of all provision. In Scripture, giving the firstfruits is an act of faith and gratitude that honors the Lord above all. The book of Proverbs exhorts, 'Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase' (Proverbs 3:9), with the promise that the barns will be filled. To offer the first fruit of the harvest is to confess that everything belongs to God and to trust him for what remains. This practice does not impoverish the giver; it places God first and invites his blessing. The New Testament lifts this theme higher: Christ is called 'the firstfruits of them that slept' (1 Corinthians 15:20). His resurrection is the guarantee and foretaste of our own: just as the firstfruits announce and assure the whole harvest to come, the resurrection of Christ assures believers of the hope of eternal life. These verses therefore teach us to honor God with the first and the best, to live in trust toward his provision, and to ground our hope on the risen Christ, the glorious firstfruits of God's great harvest. To give the firstfruits is to declare, in offering and in life, that God comes before all else.
