Fighting the Good Fight of Faith
Scripture compares the Christian life to a good fight of faith that calls for perseverance, courage, and steadfastness. At the end of his course, the apostle Paul can declare in 2 Timothy 4:7, 'I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.' This fight is not waged against people, but consists in remaining faithful to the very end, despite trials, temptations, and spiritual opposition. 1 Timothy 6:12 explicitly exhorts believers to 'fight the good fight of faith' and to lay hold on 'eternal life,' to which we are called. It is a sustained effort, a persevering resistance that leans not on one's own strength but on the power of God. Ephesians 6:11 calls us to put on 'the whole armour of God,' that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil; the believer does not advance alone or unarmed, but equipped by his Lord. Victory, moreover, does not come from our own valor, for 1 Corinthians 15:57 gives thanks to God, 'which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.' The good fight is therefore waged in dependence, with our eyes fixed on the promised reward and on the One who has already overcome. These verses encourage us to persevere in the faith, to resist trials, and to hold firmly to the victory God secures for all his own, until the course is finished and the faith is kept.
