Fatigue in the Bible
Fatigue—the weariness of body and soul that comes from labor, sorrow, and the wear of a fallen world—is met in Scripture not with condemnation but with the tender invitation of God to find rest in him. Jesus speaks directly to the exhausted: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). He does not despise the tired; he calls them to himself, offering a rest that the world's remedies cannot supply. The Bible knows that human strength has limits and that even the strongest grow weary. Isaiah declares, "He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak" (Isaiah 40:29), and promises that "those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint" (Isaiah 40:31). Renewal comes not from gritting our teeth but from waiting on the Lord, whose strength never fails. God ministers to the fatigued with care like a shepherd. David testifies, "He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters" (Psalm 23:2). To weary Moses, burdened with leading a stubborn people, God promised, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest" (Exodus 33:14). The presence of God is itself the rest the soul craves. Scripture also encourages perseverance when the work is wearying. Paul urges, "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up" (Galatians 6:9). And though the body wastes away, the believer is renewed within: "Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day" (2 Corinthians 4:16). Fatigue is real, but it is never the final word; the God who made us invites the weary to rest in him and renews the strength of all who wait on him.
