False Prophets in the Bible

Scripture warns repeatedly against false prophets who claim to speak in God's name yet utter words He has not sent. Jesus Himself cautions, "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them" (Matthew 7:15-16). Already in the Old Testament, Jeremiah denounced those who prophesied peace where there was no peace, and he taught that the word of a true prophet is known by its fulfillment (Jeremiah 28:9). Discernment is therefore essential for the believer: it means measuring every word and teaching against the Word of God, which remains the supreme standard of truth. A false prophet may seduce through spiritual-sounding speech, apparent signs, or persuasive charisma, but his message drifts from the gospel and dishonors Christ. This is why John exhorts, "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God" (1 John 4:1). These verses call for vigilance and wisdom, so that we are not deceived by those who turn people from the truth. By holding firmly to the revelation of Scripture and examining the fruit of every doctrine, the believer remains anchored in truth and protected against the seduction of error.
