The Fall of Adam and Eve in the Bible

The fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden is the event that introduced sin, suffering, and death into the world (Genesis 3). Tempted by the serpent, our first parents disobeyed God's command and broke the perfect fellowship they had enjoyed with their Creator. The consequences of that disobedience reach the whole human race: "Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned" (Romans 5:12). The fall brought not only physical death but spiritual separation from God, painful toil, and sorrow. Yet even in the moment of judgment, God spoke a word of hope: the offspring of the woman would crush the head of the serpent (Genesis 3:15). This verse, called the protoevangelium, is the first announcement of the gospel. The fall was not an accident in God's plan. Romans 5:12-21 sets the parallel between Adam and Christ: where the disobedience of one man made death reign, the obedience of one man, Jesus Christ, makes grace and righteousness reign. "For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive" (1 Corinthians 15:22). Christ is the second Adam who reverses the fall of the first and reconciles humanity to God, turning the story of ruin into a story of redemption.
