The Faithfulness of God and of the Believer

The faithfulness of God is the rock on which all faith rests. In the heart of Lamentations, when everything seemed lost, Jeremiah proclaims an unshakable hope: "The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness" (Lamentations 3:22-23). God keeps his promises and remains faithful even when we are unfaithful to him. His constancy depends neither on our merits nor on our feelings, but on his unchanging character. This faithfulness runs through all of Scripture. Deuteronomy 7:9 confesses it: "Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him to a thousand generations." And the apostle Paul reassures believers: "If we are faithless, he remains faithful — for he cannot deny himself" (2 Timothy 2:13). God does not change; his word holds, and one can rest on it in every season. Because God is faithful, he also calls his people to faithfulness, in small things as in great. Jesus praises the servant in these terms: "Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much" (Matthew 25:21). The believer's faithfulness is not the source but the reflection of God's: it draws its strength from trust in his unshakable loyalty. These verses celebrate a God who never lets us go and invite us to walk with perseverance, day after day, in faithfulness to the One who remains faithful to us.

Frequently Asked Questions

On what does God's faithfulness rest?
On his unchanging character, not on our merits. Lamentations 3:22-23 proclaims, "His mercies are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." And 2 Timothy 2:13 adds, "If we are faithless, he remains faithful — for he cannot deny himself."
Does God remain faithful even when we fail?
Yes. His faithfulness does not depend on ours. Deuteronomy 7:9 describes him as "the faithful God who keeps covenant... to a thousand generations." His constancy remains when our feelings and our strength waver; it is our point of support.
How is the believer called to faithfulness?
In small things as in great. Jesus praises the servant: "You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much" (Matthew 25:21). The believer's faithfulness reflects God's and draws its strength from trust in his unshakable loyalty, day after day.
