Faith as a Gift of God

Scripture teaches that faith is, ultimately, a gift of God and not a product of human effort. The apostle Paul affirms it clearly: "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God" (Ephesians 2:8). The very capacity to believe and to trust in God is born of his grace; it is not earned, it is received. This truth humbles pride and consoles the weak, for salvation does not rest on the strength of our faith but on the faithfulness of the One who gives it. Because it comes from God, faith can grow and be asked for. The disciples pleaded with the Lord: "Increase our faith!" (Luke 17:5), acknowledging that they could not produce it on their own. Likewise, a grieving father cried out: "I believe; help my unbelief!" (Mark 9:24). Authentic faith knows how to recognize its weakness and turn to the One who is its source to be strengthened. Faith also has an ordinary means by which God awakens it: his Word. "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ" (Romans 10:17). To receive Scripture is to expose oneself to the means by which God kindles and nourishes faith in the heart. These verses invite us to welcome with humility and gratitude the faith that God grants, to ask for it when it wavers, and to nourish it through his Word, recognizing that it is, from beginning to end, a gift of his grace.
