Faith and Reason: To Believe and to Understand
Faith and reason are not enemies. Biblical faith does not require renouncing the intellect; on the contrary, it calls us to be "prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you" (1 Peter 3:15). God, who gave us a mind to know him and a heart to trust him, honors a thinking faith — one capable of examining, discerning, and giving an account of what it believes. Scripture even calls us to love God with the mind: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength" (Mark 12:30). Reason is not excluded from the life of faith; it is part of it. The Bereans are commended because they received the word "with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so" (Acts 17:11). To believe is not to refuse to think, but to test and hold fast to what is true. Reason nevertheless has its limits, and faith rises where the intellect alone cannot reach. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5). Faith does not contradict reason, but it surpasses it by clinging to a God who exceeds our understanding: "For my thoughts are not your thoughts" (Isaiah 55:8). These verses show that believing and understanding walk together: reason leads to the threshold of faith, and faith opens onto a truth greater than reason alone, without ever despising it.
