Ezekiel in the Bible

Ezekiel was a priest and prophet who ministered to the exiles of Judah by the rivers of Babylon, called to declare God's glory, judgment, and restoring grace. His book opens with one of Scripture's most awesome visions: "the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God" (Ezekiel 1:1). Overwhelmed by the glory of the Lord, Ezekiel was commissioned with the words, "Son of man, stand up on your feet and I will speak to you" (Ezekiel 2:1), a title ("son of man") that recurs throughout the book and underscores his humanity before the majestic God. God appointed Ezekiel as a watchman responsible to warn his people: "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me" (Ezekiel 3:17). His ministry combined hard words of judgment with vivid, often dramatic signs, yet at its heart was a promise of inner transformation. God pledged, "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh" (Ezekiel 36:26), foreshadowing the new birth that the Spirit brings. Ezekiel's most famous vision is the valley of dry bones, a picture of hopeless Israel restored to life. God told him, "Prophesy to these bones and say to them, 'Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!'" (Ezekiel 37:4), and promised, "I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life" (Ezekiel 37:5). The Lord also revealed his own tender care for his scattered people: "I myself will search for my sheep and look after them" (Ezekiel 34:11), a promise fulfilled in Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Ezekiel's life and message proclaim that God is glorious and holy, that he judges sin, but that he is also the God who seeks the lost, gives new hearts, and breathes life into what seems dead. He calls believers to listen to his word and to trust the God who makes all things new.
