Eyes Closed: Spiritual Blindness and the Call to See
The book of Acts 28:27 quotes Isaiah 6:10 to describe the spiritual blindness of those who refuse to see the truth of God: "For the heart of this people has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them." Spiritual blindness is not first of all a lack of information; it is a deliberate refusal, a heart that closes itself through pride or hardness. Scripture shows that this blindness is not merely human. The apostle Paul writes that "the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ" (2 Corinthians 4:4). Eyes closed leave the soul in darkness, unable to recognize the light of Christ that is freely offered. The tragedy is not that the truth is absent, but that it is present and people turn away from it. Yet this verse is not a sentence of doom: it is both a warning and an invitation. Where the heart has shut itself "lest it should turn and I would heal them," the same word reveals that healing remains possible for whoever turns to God. Jesus declares to his own: "Blessed are your eyes, for they see" (Matthew 13:16). The believer's prayer joins that of the psalmist: "Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law" (Psalm 119:18). Closing the eyes leads to darkness; opening them before God leads to light, to conversion, and to healing.
