Evil Spirits and the Authority of Christ

Scripture acknowledges the existence of evil spirits, but above all it proclaims the sovereign authority of Christ over them. The apostle John encourages the believer, "Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world" (1 John 4:4). The disciple does not live in dread of spiritual powers, but in the victory already won by Jesus Christ, who triumphed over them openly (Colossians 2:15). The Gospels constantly show this authority at work. The unclean spirits recognize Jesus and obey him: "With authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!" (Luke 4:36). This power the Lord shared with his disciples, not so they would grow proud, but so they would rejoice that their names are written in heaven (Luke 10:20). Deliverance is not a matter of human techniques, but of the power of the name of Jesus. Facing spiritual battle, the believer is not unarmed. The apostle Paul exhorts, "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil" (Ephesians 6:11). James 4:7 adds the promise, "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." These verses teach us not to give in to fear or fascination, but to stand firm in faith, clothed in the armor of God and resting on the victory of Christ. The enemy is real, but already defeated; the last word belongs to the Lord.
