Overcoming Evil With Good
Scripture acknowledges the reality of evil with clear eyes, yet it proclaims that God is stronger and that good triumphs. The apostle Paul exhorts, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:21). Far from any resignation, the Bible calls the believer to resist evil, to trust in the justice of God, and to hold fast to what is good. Evil does not have the last word in the history that God is guiding. The Word distinguishes two attitudes. On one side, aversion to evil: "O you who love the Lord, hate evil!" (Psalm 97:10); on the other, persevering attachment to good: "Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good" (Romans 12:9). The spiritual battle does not consist in answering evil with evil, but in disarming it through goodness, truth, and love, after the example of Christ. Facing evil, the believer is not left to personal strength alone. Jesus teaches us to pray, "Deliver us from evil" (Matthew 6:13), acknowledging both the real threat of the enemy and the deliverance assured by God. The apostle also reminds us that "for those who love God all things work together for good" (Romans 8:28). These verses offer hope and direction: they invite us not to be overwhelmed by the evil present in the world, but to live in the confidence that good, rooted in God, will prevail. The last word belongs to the one who triumphed on the cross.
