Everlasting Father: A Name of the Messiah

Among the names of the Messiah announced by the prophet Isaiah, one reveals the perpetual tenderness of God: "Everlasting Father." "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6). This title does not confuse the persons of the Trinity, but proclaims that the one who comes brings a fatherly care that never passes away: he is eternal in his love as in his reign. God is not an absent or fleeting father. Scripture presents him as "the Father of mercies and God of all comfort" (2 Corinthians 1:3). He knows his children, carries them, and does not forsake them. Psalm 103:13 declares it gently: "As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him." His fatherhood is neither capricious nor intermittent; it remains faithful through every generation. Because he is the Everlasting Father, his love depends neither on our merits nor on circumstances. Isaiah 40:28 reminds us that he is "the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary." The believer can therefore rest in a fatherhood that does not age, does not lose heart, and does not change. These verses comfort the afflicted heart and assure it that it is loved by a Father who remains forever, attentive, compassionate, and faithful.
