The Evangelist in the Bible
An evangelist in the Bible is a person gifted and called by God to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, especially to those who have not yet heard it. The evangelist is one of the ministry gifts the risen Christ gave to His church for its building up. Paul writes that Christ "gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:11). The evangelist stands among these foundational gifts as one whose particular burden is the spread of the gospel. The clearest biblical portrait of an evangelist is Philip, who is explicitly named in this role: Paul and his companions "entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him" (Acts 21:8). Philip's ministry illustrates what the word means in action. "Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ" (Acts 8:5), and when he met the Ethiopian official puzzling over Isaiah, "Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus" (Acts 8:35). The evangelist explains the Scriptures and points hearers to the Savior. Evangelism is not reserved for the specially gifted alone; it is also a charge laid upon every minister. Paul urged Timothy, a pastor, "do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry" (2 Timothy 4:5). This reflects the universal command Jesus gave: "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation" (Mark 16:15). The evangelist embodies that mission with particular intensity, going where Christ is not yet known and faithfully announcing the news that saves. To honor the evangelist's calling is to treasure the gospel and long for the lost to be found.
