Evangelism in the Bible
Evangelism is the proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ so that people may hear, believe, and be saved. It is not a marginal activity for a few specialists but the central mission Jesus entrusted to His whole church. In the Great Commission He commanded, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19). Mark records the same charge in vivid terms: "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation" (Mark 16:15). The scope is universal, reaching every nation and every person. This mission is empowered by the Holy Spirit, not by human cleverness. Jesus promised, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth" (Acts 1:8). Witnessing begins where we are and extends outward until it embraces the whole world. Evangelism is necessary because faith comes through hearing the message. Paul reasons, "How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?" (Romans 10:14). Believers are therefore Christ's representatives: "We are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us" (2 Corinthians 5:20). Even ordinary believers are called to readiness: "Always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you" (1 Peter 3:15). And the message itself carries divine power, for Paul was "not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes" (Romans 1:16). Evangelism, then, is a Spirit-empowered, hope-filled invitation to the world to be reconciled to God.
