Ethnic Reconciliation in the Bible
Ethnic reconciliation is the biblical truth that in Christ the dividing walls between peoples are broken down and a new humanity is created from every nation. The gospel does not merely tolerate ethnic difference; it heals the hostility that sin has bred between groups and gathers them into one redeemed family. Paul declares of Christ, "For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility" (Ephesians 2:14). The cross is the place where enmity is put to death and former enemies are joined. In Christ, the deepest human identity is no longer rooted in ethnicity but in union with the Savior. "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28). This unity does not erase God-given differences; it relativizes them under a greater bond. As Paul writes, "Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all" (Colossians 3:11). The foundation for reconciliation is the character of God Himself, who shows no partiality. Peter learned this when God sent him to the Gentile Cornelius: "Truly I understand that God shows no partiality" (Acts 10:34). Christ "reconcile[d] us to himself" and entrusted to the church "the ministry of reconciliation" (2 Corinthians 5:18), making peace "through the cross, thereby killing the hostility" (Ephesians 2:16). The final goal is glimpsed in John's vision of "a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb" (Revelation 7:9). Ethnic reconciliation, then, is not a social add-on but a fruit of the gospel and a foretaste of heaven.
