Eternity in the Bible
Eternity in the Bible describes the unending, timeless reality of God and the everlasting future He has prepared for His people. Scripture teaches that human beings are made with eternity in view: "He has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end" (Ecclesiastes 3:11). This God-given longing for the everlasting cannot be satisfied by anything temporal, for our hearts were fashioned to know the eternal God Himself. The heart of biblical eternity is the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). Jesus defined this life relationally: "And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent" (John 17:3). Eternal life is therefore not merely endless duration but a present, living communion with God that death cannot interrupt. Scripture sets the eternal against the temporal to reorder our priorities. "For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal" (2 Corinthians 4:18). The wages of sin is death, "but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23), and "God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son" (1 John 5:11). Because God Himself is "from everlasting to everlasting" (Psalm 90:2), the believer's hope is anchored beyond the grave. The final vision is one of tearless joy: "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more" (Revelation 21:4). Eternity, then, is both a present possession in Christ and a glorious future home.
